Glen Paulk grew up in New Mexico and completed his undergraduate degree at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. After a tour of duty in the Air Force, where he won his pilot’s wings, he returned to UNM and completed studies for a master’s degree. After completion of his master’s, he accepted employment at a major aircraft corporation as an experimental test pilot. In the early 60s he was transferred into a management position that required a move to the Marshall Islands in the Pacific. From there it was Hawaii and finally, Steamboat Springs, Colorado. When he arrived at Steamboat in 1970, the first gondola was being installed and the base area consisted of very few buildings. Torian Plum was a small but wonderful restaurant. Career advancements at Steamboat consisted of moving from vice-president of ski operations to president of the Steamboat Ski Corporation. He retired in 1982. It was after retirement that woodturning became a part of his life. All talent for the art has been acquired through books, video tapes, and many “failures” on the lathe. The excitement of revealing the beauty within a piece of wood has not diminished with time. |
